Lecture on Sami shamanism

The Shamanic Association warmly welcomes you to an exciting week filled with educational experiences and cultural immersion during the Sami Week. One of the events being a lecture at the library. As a unique religious community dedicated to preserving and disseminating knowledge about shamanic traditions, we are proud to present a diverse program exploring Sami shamanism from pre-Christian times to modern-day practices.

The lecture takes the audience into the multifaceted world of Sami noaidevuohta – Sami shamanism – as it is both historically described and lived as practice today. From the perspective of a personal journey as a reconnecting Sami and over three decades as a practicing shaman, it illuminates how animism, polytheism, and relationships with ancestors, nature spirits, and sacred landscapes continue to shape Sami spirituality. Participants gain insight into the noaidi's role, the significance of the drum, sieidi sites, sun and moon goddesses, and how Sami cosmic narratives are reflected in the starry sky and in the understanding of humanity's place in nature.

Blending Scholarship and Practice
The lecture connects research-based knowledge with experiential practice, demonstrating that Sami shamanism is not merely a relic of the past but a living tradition slowly finding its way back in Sápmi.

Invitation During Sami Week
In the context of Sami Week at Tromsø Library, the audience is invited to reflect on identity, spirituality, nature understanding, and what it means to live in a reciprocal relationship with the land, the animals, and the stars above us.

Founded in 2012, the Shamanic Association aims to be a knowledge disseminator and bridge between past and present. We focus on documenting, studying, and sharing shamanic practices, with particular emphasis on their historical roots and development through the ages. Our approach combines academic research with practical experience, providing a unique perspective on shamanism's role in society.
